Crossing the Gazzirola mountain

The perfect hike for days with good visibility: from the summit of the Gazzirola (also: Garzirola) you have a fascinating 360° view of the entire Ticino mountain landscape and Lake Lugano. From Val Colla, with its pretty mountain villages and typical Ticino charm, we climb up to the San Lucio Pass, over which the border to Italy runs. The historical importance of the pass is evident from the 15th century church that adorns the top of the pass. There are two huts with refreshments, the Capanna San Lucio on the Swiss side and the Rifugio San Lucio on the Italian side. Both offer good cuisine with regional specialities. You just have to decide whether you prefer to eat overlooking the Val Colla or the Val Carvagna. Finally we hike over a long, grassy ridge to the Gazzirola and from there on a second gentle ridge downhill to the west.
